Division is one of the four basic operations of Mathematics, and like the other operations it is in our daily lives. Just as addition has its inverse operation, which is subtraction, multiplication also has its inverse operation: division.

Parts or elements of the division

One of the methods that make it easier to understandthe division algorithm is the so-called key method. Let’s first understand the nomenclatures of this method. To do this, suppose we divide a number N by a number d:

N → Dividend

d → Splitter

q → Quotient

r → Rest

Example:

In the division of 30 by 4, using the key method, we have:

30 → Dividend

4 → Divider

7 → Quotient

2 → Rest

The key method tells us that when we divide the number 30 by the number 4, we don’t find an exact division (see remainder 2), that is, when we divide 30 by 4, we have 7 whole parts and 2 more remainder. We say that a division is exact when the remainder is equal to 0.
